LEESBURG — Lake-Sumter State College student and Lakehawks catcher Christopher Blanton has received the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award by the Florida College System Activities Association.

The award — the highest honor an athlete can receive from the association — just one of the many the baseball standout has earned this year.

In addition, the FSCAA Baseball Committee awarded him the Bill Tuten Baseball Scholar Athlete, named after a member of the FSCAA Hall of Fame. Also, the Mid-Florida Conference named him the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Blanton, who graduated from Timber Creek High School in Orlando, is the only athlete in LSSC's history to receive these awards. Mike Matulia, LSSC's athletic director, was effusive in his praise.

"It is quite impressive and no small feat that Chris has been selected for all three awards in a single year," Matulia said.
