COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Touting a conference-leading 10 saves and 1.04 ERA, Bethune-Cookman senior right-handed closer Jordan Dailey was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year midseason watch list on Tuesday. Among the 51 NCAA Division I relief pitchers nominated for the award, presented annually to the top reliever in college baseball, Dailey ranks 11th nationally and tops the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rankings.
A 6-0 senior from Orlando, Fla., Dailey has been steady as one of the nation’s top relievers this season. In addition to the saves, he has logged a 4-0 record and 1.04 ERA in 26 appearances, allowing just eight walks versus 41 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings pitched. He has held opponents to a .191 batting average in his appearances.
“It’s definitely an honor to be on the list, but it’s truly something he’s earned over the course of four years,” Head Coach Jason Beverlin said. “If you look at his numbers, he’s been as consistent as anybody in the country over the course of his college career. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in conference or non-conference, he comes in consistently with a great approach, ready to compete and prepared to get the job done day in and day out.”
A four-year reliever at B-CU, Dailey recently set the Bethune-Cookman program mark in appearances, reaching the record at 90 during a March 13 contest versus Jacksonville. He has since worked to push the record notably higher, with a current count of 106 career appearances for the Wildcats.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists on a list released June 5. The NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with the award recipient to be announced during the College World Series.
